************************************************** * * * XtalView for Mac OS X 10 * * * ************************************************** XtalViewDarwinv1.0.tar.Z contains executables for XtalView for use on Mac OS X 10.1 and above. Prerequisites 1. Working X Windows system such as XDarwin. This is available at the Apple OS X software site: http://www.apple.com/macosx/x11/ (Note if you have an older X windows such as XDarwin, try the new one from Apple which is much faster!) 2. Base system for XtalView. If you do not have an existing XtalView installation you can obtain this from CCMS. For downloading instructions send an email to CCMS mail server ccms-request@sdsc.edu. Leave the subject blank and put the single line 'get xtalview' in the message body. A return email will contain full instructions. If you do not want to install another architecture, but only the Mac version, you only need xtalview.tar.Z. 3. 3-button USB mouse. These cost about $15 and the program will be difficult to use without one. (Note almost all PC wheel mice use the wheel as the middle button). Use can use a single button mouse or laptop trackpad by holding the ctrl and apple keys down, but I find this very awkward. Installation Place the tar file in your $XTALVIEWHOME directory. Type: tar -xvZf XtalViewDarwinv1.0.tar.Z This will place the executables in bin/powerpcDarwin5 and make a symbolic link to bin/powerpcDarwin6. It also replaces bin/share/archosv. (If you have modified this file, you should back it up first.) Verify installation cd XtalView source XtalView.env and then type "which xfit". You are ready to go. This is a beta version kindly supplied by George Philips. There are a number of known issues, but the package works well. CCMS will be working to get an official distribution ready at their web site with a newer version of XtalView. Duncan McRee ccms-help@sdsc.edu
